Domestic Violence
Publication date: 06/26/2009 IN BRIEF: Recently, in two of our neighboring communities, horrifically brutal crimes were committed against ex-wives in the presence of children. It reminds us in law enforcement of the helplessness victims feel when they think they have no hope or anywhere to turn. Please remember that there is hope and help available for people who are living with physical and emotional abuse and living in fear because they do not know where to go. Jane Taylor of Mental Health America of Boone County, 1122 North Lebanon St. Lebanon, Indiana 46052, 765 482-3020, will be speaking briefly at the upcoming Zionsville Town Council meeting to alert every one of the services available in our county. These services include a temporary safe house for victims who take that giant step to save their children and themselves by getting away from the abuser. Counseling and legal services are available at low or no cost to the victim by recovering fees from the abusers. No cost protective orders restricting the abuser from contacting the victim are available. These are a needed first step in allowing law enforcement to protect the victims. Health and well being classes are available to educate community members of domestic violence. If divorce becomes part of the permanent solution, there are classes for children and adults to help them through the changes, answer questions and support them through the grieving processes. Finally, there are supervised child visitation programs that help the children and parents feel safe during visitations. A local 24 hr crisis hotline is available at 765 482-1599. Additional 24 hr a day hotline services are available through the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violance, 1915 West 18th Street Indianapolis, In. 46202, 317 917 3685, 1 800 538-3393, crisis hotline 1 800 332-7385. We encourage any child, spouse, boyfriend/girlfriend or elder person who believes they are in an abusive situation to come to the police department and speak to us even if you don’t want a report taken. Let us guide you to available services or provide you with options. Domestic violence is often cyclic with the abuser expressing remorse after the abuse making the victim feel comforted followed by a calm period before the tension and abuse are repeated. Our and prayers are with the families of these most recent tragedies.

Central Indiana Travel Survey
Publication date: 05/06/2009 IN BRIEF: Telephone interviewers hired by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Planning Organization (IndyMPO) are making phone calls to randomly selected households in our community to recruit participants for the Central Indiana Travel Survey (CITS), the first in-depth study of household travel behavior in Central Indiana in more than 40 years. This study is being conducted as part of a long-term effort to improve travel demand modeling and forecasting travel needs in Central Indiana. Travel forecasts produced by travel models are used to help citizens, planners, and elected officials plan for the future transportation needs of Central Indiana. Good travel forecasts help decision makers evaluate and prioritize different regional transportation projects for eligibility for federal transportation funds. Projects considered range from highway reconstruction to rapid transit commuter train systems. Survey design and a survey pre-test of more than 300 households have already been completed. Interviewers have also begun calling a much larger sample of households and mailing letters to households who do not have listed telephones, asking residents to agree to be part of the survey. Once enrolled, participants are scheduled to receive a travel diary for each member of the household and are assigned a travel date for recording each person's travel over a 24-hour period in those diaries. If you are contacted by someone associated with this survey, please be assured that it is legitimate and valid. The needs and of Zionsville should and must be included in this survey effort to promote our community and our future travel needs. If you are asked, please consider participating in this important survey. |
